ESSENTIAL COMMS SKILLS BOOSTER

Getting up to speed with effective bite-size sessions

There’s been more change in the last 12-months than the last decade.

You’ve been busy since 2020 and its not let up.

Comms planning, evaluation, algorithms, ChatGPT, Threads… the list feels overwhelming.

Where can you find the time to get up to speed?

I’ve done the hardwork, the research, the testing so you and your team don’t have to.

In five online sessions that easily fit into your working week I’ll go over the basics of everything you need to know.

Each session will give you what you need to know to help you deliver cutting edge communications. You’ll get slides and resources and access to a video playback of the session.

Someone once asked me if I can run training that covered everything they needed to know to be a good comms person and be up to speed.

This is it.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

Five hour-long sessions delivered online on different days as islands of respite in your busy calendar.

Session 1: THE BASICS: THE MEDIA LANDSCAPE, COMMS PLANNING AND EVALUATION (1 hr)

We’ll go through up-to-date research to show you how different demographics are using the media so you can reach the right audience.

Good comms planning starts with the basics. We’ll look at AMEC and GCS principles. We’ll also go through an easy-to-use template to help you know how to plan a campaign and make sure you’re talking to the right people at the right time.

Session 2: CREATING CONTENT: HOW TO USE THE ALGORITHM (90 mins)

You’ll be given a tour of the main platforms and go through the algorithm so you can create better content.

We’ll look at Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Instagram.

You’ll understand what content works so you can shape better content.

Session 3: UNDERSTAND NEW PLATFORMS: TIKTOK, NEXTDOOR, WHATSAPP TOOLS & THREADS (1 hr)

WhatsApp is the third largest platform in the UK while TikTok has more than 12 UK million users. NextDoor has eight million users and growing.

Threads has come from nowhere to capture 100 million global users in seven days.

What are those platforms and how can you connect with them as an organisation?

You’ll look at strategies as well as the TikTok algorithm.

You’ll be up to speed on new, emerging and underused channels.

Session 4: USING FACEBOOK GROUPS TO REACH YOUR AUDIENCE & CHATGPT(1hr)

More than 1.8 billion Facebook users are members of groups.

You’ll see five years of research to show why this is important. I’ll show you how to carry out an audit and how to connect with Facebook group admins, and be where your audience is.

You’ll also have a basic introductuion to ChatGPT so you can see where it can fit into your work flow.

Session 5: WHEN TO ENGAGE AND HOW TO DEAL WITH ONLINE COMMENT, CRITICISM AND ABUSE (1 hr)

When to engage and when to take action needs to be in the armoury of every comms person especially if they’re dealing with social media comments.

How to rota, engage, hide, mute and the routes open to you in law to escalate are dealt with here so you can better advise.

Who is this for: Communications, PR and digital comms people looking to improve their skills.

Who the trainer is: Dan Slee is a digital communications consultant with more than 20 years experience working for and with the media. He worked in local government communications before going freelance in 2013. He has helped train more than 3,000 people from more than 600 organisations over the past nine years.

How to take part: You can join a public workshop or you can bring me in to deliver the training for your team. With this, online sessions are extended to 90-minutes to allow for extra questions and debate. Scroll down and drop me a note through the web form at the bottom of the page.

As a bonus… tea or coffee?

One of the things I miss from in-person training is the decent refreshments that come with it. So, everyone who signs up has the option to have sent to them a box of Teapigs tea or a bag of specially roasted coffee ground by a specialist coffee maker. That and some stickers, postcards and a Tunnocks teacake.
